Do’s, Don’ts, and How-to’s
Though we in Scottsdale, AZ only dream of cooler temperatures, most of the northern hemisphere is starting to cool. We welcome back the scarf – that fabulous, inexpensive accessory that can be worn countless ways, beautifully cover up neck and neckline flaws, add warmth, and make an outfit pop.
We turned to about.com and scarves.net for help with this fashion wonder. Now, you too can make a fashion statement this fall armed with the essential scarf do’s, don’ts, and how to’s.
DO:
• Mix a tone-on-tone scarf and outfit in neutrals — black, navy, camel, cream — and take on a sophisticated vibe when you mix fabrics (satin, shine, wool, etc.)
• Make a scarf your spotlight accessory.
• Save skinny scarves for more fitted tops and jackets.
• Wear a scarf for dressy events. Eveningwear works best with a pashmina shawl, gracefully draped around the shoulders.
• Wear a long, fringed winter scarf — in cashmere, blends, wool or knit — tied once close to your neck.
Don’t:
• Overwhelm your look with a scarf. An oversized scarf can look like it’s choking you. Skip the trend of giant knotted scarves on your neck, and go for a more timeless look with a simply draped or tied scarf.
• Don’t overaccessorize. Wear a smaller brimmed or knit hat with a large scarf so the two accessories don’t compete with each other.
How to:
• Take a long scarf and hold it in front of you. Twist it a few times in the middle, then toss the ends straight over your back. Bring each end back to the front on the opposite side and leave the ends to dangle.
• Use a larger scarf or shawl and toss the ends over each side. You can use a decorative brooch to keep it in place.
• Visit scarves.net to read instructions and watch videos for 37 different ways to tie every type of scarf. You’ll want to try them all!
