Perk up your style with these accessory do’s and don’ts for the fashionista:

  • Consider replacing the belt that comes with a dress, or pants, with one of your own. When you use one of your belts, nine times out of ten it will upgrade the overall look of your outfit.
  • Choose one accessory that becomes your trademark of fashion: a scarf, a flower, jewelry, shoes to die for, or a purse to live for!
  • Don’t be fooled into a large print dress or pants. It always looks better on the mannequin than it will on you. Small print is more becoming and more flattering to most of us.
  • Tights cover a multitude of leg flaws, and will give a shorter skirt a smooth look from top to bottom.
  • Vests come in all different fabrics and textures, from sweater to faux fur, and can go with anything—dressy, or casual. They can give last year’s dress or pants an updated look.
  • In case you haven’t noticed, the shift dress is back, (and in)! Add at least one to your wardrobe. Accent with great jewelry.
  • The multipurpose bag is the quintessential carry-all tote. Fill it with the necessities—laptop, makeup, bottled water—and there will still be room to spare.
  • In terms of jewelry, wear one statement piece at a time.
  • Make sure that the jewelry and the outfit do not compete with each other. Wear a subtle outfit with an over-the-top necklace.
  • Matchy-matchy jewelry is a big no-no.
  • Shorter statement necklaces are usually better with a lower scoop neck and long necklaces look best with simple tops with little or no embellishment.

The final word:  Live your life from the inside out, rather than the outside in. Health and happiness are the best accessories for your physical beauty. Take care of yourself, exercise, eat well, get enough sleep, wear sun screen, and don’t take yourself or your fashion too seriously. Next year, it will all change!
